Zaadstra art gallery at Gravelly Beach

Hi there

We had a great day on Sunday.
Thankfully Saturday’s deluge eventually ceased!
A beautiful day with drinks in the sunshine and lots of great conversation.
Thanks to all those who were able to come along and sorry we did not get to speak with everyone.

Please find attached video article from The Examiner newspaper (just click the link below).
They popped in during the morning just beforehand.

Thanks again for your interest in the gallery and we hope to catch up with everyone soon.

Kind regards,
Tanya & Pieter

Mapping the Island

This is the media Release for Mapping the Island

West Tamar Arts Group in partnership with
Tasmania Regional Arts and Moores Hill Estate Winery present:

Tasmania 1:100,000 Mapping the Island
Dates: 9th October to 30th October
Hrs: 10.00 am – 5.00pm Daily
At: Moores Hill Estate Winery
3343 West Tamar Highway
Sidmouth.

Following rave reviews and enthusiastic public attendance during 10 Days on the Island in 2009, it is now touring Tasmanian communities through Tasmania Regional Arts Touring and Access program.

Curators Penny Carey-Wells and Diane Perndt selected national and international artists, including poets, chefs, wine makers, dancers, musicians, papermakers, printmakers and mixed media visual artists, who received a section taken from a topographical map of Tasmania. They were asked to create a two-dimensional paper based response measuring 29 x 29 cm square. Over 140 extraordinary works were received - each piece telling its own story from the deeply personal, to the wonderfully witty and the aesthetically masterful.

From the original exhibition the curators have selected nearly of half the works for further touring. Most of these are now housed in individual perspex display boxes suitable for a multitude of venues. The tour begins in Burnie Regional Art Gallery opening on 28 January 2011 after which it will travel to other Tasmania regional centres.

Look closely - enjoy the humour, find the bizarre, search for the wayward and discover the wonderful in this fascinating exploration and interpretation of our island.

B!C!T!

B!C!T!
"The night was an exciting mix of rhythm, movement and interactivity. The performers graced the stage with their presence and engaged the audiences with their contemporary dance moves and beat making techniques. They used unorthadox methods to create their beat such as flippers and thongs, and taught a few young members of the audiences to beatbox. Overall it was an inspirational experience reminding me of the magic of dance."

Hebel Carving Workshop

A two day Hebel carving for beginners workshop, was conducted by Robert Boldkald, in association with the West Tamar Arts Group, in the bush setting at the Girl Guide property Nindethana, Deviot, 26-27 March 2011.  At the end of the workshop, the participants were well on their way to having completed their carving, and spoke excitedly about participating in future workshops.

Robert said, ‘Hebel is a fantastic product to learn basic carving skills.  Because Hebel is aerated concrete, it is lightweight, making it easy for everyone to cut, shape and smooth.  Results happen quickly compared to working in stone or wood and a variety of finishes can be applied to the finished work.

Congratulations to all the ‘Hebel novices’ who took part in the workshop.  It was great to see everyone eager to learn and make art in a material they had never worked with before.  This happy bunch of carvers created a wonderfully diverse assortment of work.’

Art From Trash

Art From Trash is coming around a little earlier this year, with a booking in May. This has allowed us to have the gallery for longer, so this year we will have all your amazing work on display for two full weeks, including three full weekends.
To maximize our time in the gallery we will have the usual tight deadlines for drop-off/set-up/pick-up!
There are a few changes this year. To help cover our costs the entry fee this year has been raised to $20.
A size limit has been introduced of 2 metres in any direction. This is to help keep the exhibition open to everyone who enters, maximizing the number of individual artists in the exhibition.
For the same reason we may have to limit the number of entries per person this year. Last year we had 136 entries, and I am thinking once we get to about 150 we will be pushing the limits of the gallery space. This may not happen, it all depends on how many enter this year.
So, if you would like to enter multiple works you still can, but just remember we may have to limit the number. There is plenty of time from the entry deadline until the drop-off day to sort this out.
Entry forms will also be in Resource Collectables and Tip Shop early next week, and posters will be going up soon, too. If you know anyone that is interested please ask them to email me so I can add them to our contact list.
Happy art making!
Cheers,
--

in TEERS

Mairi Ward
From the icy snow of Poatina to the beauty of the coast at Greens Beach, six artists have been commissioned to research, develop and assemble work that speaks of our interaction with the land, be it as paradise, wilderness, a place of sustenance or as an object of use and abuse.

Covering one quarter of the island’s land mass and home to 137,000 people, the Tamar Estuary and Esk River System (TEERS) is a highly valuable and bio-diverse water source extending from the catchments of the Great Western Tiers and Ben Lomond to the coast at the mouth of the Tamar Estuary via the North Esk, South Esk, Macquarie and Meander rivers.

Installation art creates an experience and is best lived with for a bit rather than simply looked at aesthetically. Strange and out-of-place elements can hold the key to connection and understanding. Each artist has considered a particular place and their responses to the environment and the water that flows through it.

If all of the world's water filled a bucket, the total amount of fresh water would be equivalent to one teaspoonful.
